America has effectively decided the penny is no longer worth making. charity: water saw the opposite opportunity. Every Penny Counts turns a photo of the retiring coin into a $40 clean-water donation, using Boy Throb’s fanbase to prove that seemingly insignificant actions can still add up.

The challenge

The global water crisis is enormous, which can make an individual contribution feel insignificant. charity: water wanted to turn that feeling on its head, while giving people an easier reason to act than another conventional fundraising appeal.

The strategy

Boy Throb’s fans, the Throb Mob, had already proved their willingness to mobilise by campaigning around band member Darshan Magdum’s US visa. charity: water redirected that collective behaviour towards clean water.

The penny supplied the metaphor. America had stopped producing a coin judged increasingly worthless. The campaign made that apparent worthlessness useful: one tiny, almost valueless object could trigger something considerably bigger.

The execution

For the 10-day US campaign, Boy Throb released I Still Remember, supported by a simple social mechanic. Find a penny, photograph it, post it publicly on Instagram or Facebook and tag @charitywater.

For every qualifying post, a donor contributes $40, up to $50,000. The audience doesn’t donate the money itself. Its small act unlocks someone else’s larger contribution, turning the penny from a symbol of negligible value into the campaign’s fundraising trigger.
