Born Ready — AA Insurance · McCann New Zealand · August 2026
A toddler drives through roundabouts, motorways and cliff-edge roads while his mother waits anxiously at home. Then reality returns. The driver is a teenager. AA Insurance has turned a parent’s inability to stop seeing their child as vulnerable into the world of the film.
The Challenge
For young drivers, getting behind the wheel represents freedom. For their parents, it introduces a new source of fear. AA Insurance wanted to encourage families to insure young drivers from the start, reassuring parents without depicting teenagers as reckless or diminishing the significance of their independence.
The Strategy
Instead of choosing between the young driver’s confidence and the parent’s concern, McCann New Zealand found a truth capable of holding both perspectives: however old or capable children become, their parents still see them as vulnerable.
The young driver may be ready for the road before the parent feels ready to let them go. AA Insurance resolves that tension by being ready for both of them.
The Execution
A young boy confidently drives through “Hazard City”, a dreamlike world of intimidating motorways, confusing roundabouts and sheer drops. When he arrives home, the viewpoint changes and reveals a teenage driver. We have been watching the mother’s imagination rather than objective reality.
Director Joel Kefali created the world using miniature sets, forced perspective, stop-motion and human-made car sounds. Its handmade imperfection makes the environment feel less like digital spectacle and more like a parent’s slightly distorted imagination.
Campaigns That Used Similar Tactics
Make the Emotion Physical: Stop describing an internal feeling and construct the reality it creates.
Baby Driver — Subaru, 2010
Subaru provides a direct precedent. A father gives safety instructions to a six-year-old sitting behind the wheel. When he hands her the keys, she becomes the 16-year-old daughter who was there all along.
Both campaigns literalise the same parental truth: no matter how old children become, their parents still see the small child they once protected. AA Insurance develops the mechanism by constructing an entire driving world from the parent’s anxiety.
Make the Production Perform the Idea: Let the way the campaign is made reinforce what the campaign means.
Embrace Life — Sussex Safer Roads Partnership, 2010
A family performs a car crash in their living room. As the seated father reacts to an imaginary impact, his wife and daughter wrap their arms around him to form a human seat belt.
Its handmade theatricality is not simply an aesthetic choice. It turns the protection of a seat belt into a family embrace. Born Ready similarly uses miniature sets, stop-motion and human-generated engine sounds to make the journey feel part of someone's imagination.
